The Marlin Bulldogs had their first 2018 football scrimmage Friday, August 17, 2018 at Legion Field against the Rice Bulldogs. The Marlin Bulldogs were very anxious to show off the hard work they’ve put in during the last two weeks of training camp.
A few key players such as Donavan Blakes, SirCharleston Lee Butler, and Braylon Fisher were held out to keep fresh for the new year. QB Sophomore Tydae Peel led the Bulldogs out on the field for the first possession of the game. Peel made an eye raising play as he threw for over 60 yards to Denim Gibson for a TD. He also had a couple of touches that led to bigger plays in the game.
Arstivian Hopkins showed the speedster side of Marlin’s run game. He came out of the backfield bursting for first downs and even running for over 50 yards on a few carries.
The Dogs would go on to show off their skill on the defensive side of the ball getting some big hits and key plays from star studded D Linemen Deandre People’s, JB Benjamin, and Ashton Ricks. The Dogs were in a 3-4 defense with linebackers LaTravius Johnson and Ryan Shaw filling all running gaps effortlessly.
The Dogs defense only gave up one TD in the scrimmage.
The Dogs defense had over 3 takeaways and everyone was swarming to the ball like a pack of bees. The overall scrimmage showed that the Dogs are a young team. To add, they are also fast, competitive, and anxious this 2018 football season.
The Bulldogs have great potential and will have a great season if these young guys stick to the course and work hard.
The scrimmage ended with Marlin 6 Rice 7.
