The Marlin Bulldogs matched up against the Blooming Grove Lions for the Derrick Johnson Kickoff Classic at Waco ISD stadium Thursday, August 31, 2017.
The Bulldogs came out with a chip on their shoulders against Blooming Grove and early in the 1st quarter the Bulldogs made a statement. Collins connects with Ish Brooks on a 38 yard pass into the end zone putting Marlin on the board 1st to score.
The Bulldogs defense shut down the Blooming Grove offense keeping them scoreless throughout the game. The Bulldogs attacked the ball on every snap giving the Lions no leeway to run or pass successfully.
In the 2nd quarter of the game the Bulldogs offense strikes again. Freshman QB Donovan Blakes airs it out to Jimi Quinn for a 39 yard completion. Fullback Jeremiah Henry finishes off the drive & takes it up the middle into the endzone bringing the score to 13-0. Pena makes the extra point making it a 14-0 game.
Before halftime the Bulldogs put another 6 points on the board. Sir Charleston Lee takes it into the endzone off a 38 yard run putting the Bulldogs up by 3 touchdowns going into halftime.
Coming out into the 2nd half the Bulldogs defense was still relentless. The Dogs wouldn’t give any breathing room to the Blooming Grove offense. Just when Blooming Grove would try to gain some momentum the Bulldogs would take it away from them.
The Dogs offense take possession and drive the ball down to the goal line but was unsuccessful at getting the ball back into the end zone. The field goal team steps onto the field on 4th down with 46 seconds left before the end of the ball game and Pena’s field goal kick is good.
Marlin redeemed themselves from last week’s scrimmage against West with a 24-0 victory over Blooming Grove.
The Derrick Johnson Classic trophy was presented to Marlin’s head coach Stephen Hodge on behalf of the team by Mrs. Beverly Johnson who is the mother of NFL linebacker Derrick Johnson of the Kansas City Chiefs. Mrs. Johnson also presented Sir Charleston Lee with the offensive player of the game award.
