City of Marlin Names A Former Candidate for Texas Governor as City Manager

The Marlin City Council voted to hire Cedric Davis, a former candidate for Texas Governor for the City Manager position Tuesday, May 14, 2019, during a regularly scheduled meeting.

Mr. Davis told Marlin Pride that he is aware of the challenges that Marlin is faced with but he is ready to take on the task. He said that he has a plan to stimulate Marlin’s economy that will take 3 to 5 years to come into fruition.

It’s no secret that Marlin has a high turnover of City Managers but Mr. Davis said that he is committed to helping turn Marlin around with the help of the citizens aiding in the solution.

In 2018, Cedric Davis ran for Texas Governor and garnered over 83,000 votes.

He was the first African American to be elected Mayor of Balch Springs, TX in2008. In 2018 he was the first African American to run for and finish in the top three Democratic Candidates for Texas Governor.

He is an alumnus of Sam Houston State University with (B.Sc. Crim. Justice) followed by (Graduate Studies in Pub. Administration) from Tarleton State University, and he’s a Master Peace Officer.

The former Mayor Davis has built a long and very successful record of public service leadership to many diverse populations of the community he served. He once owned Five Star Asset Protection LLC of Texas & Louisiana a successful multimillion-dollar limited liability corporation.

He is a retired Police Chief who has served the public in a public safety and security role for more than 30 years. The former Mayor served as a School Board Trustee elect and was a member of the 2011 North Texas Super Bowl Committee Council of Mayors. Davis served on the Balch Springs, Texas Economic Development Board of Directors, and as one of its Civil Service Commissioner’s.

Furthermore, he’s served on the Greater Dallas Crime Commission and Dallas County Criminal Justice Advisory Boards, and the US National Multi-Modal Transportation Steering Committee for High-speed Rail. This Desert Storm Vet., family man and father of five, and Public Educator and taught principles of law, criminal justice, and executive public management to the students of Garland ISD prior to accepting Marlin’s City Manager position.

The former Mayor is known to be one of the most accessible, influential networker and straightforward African American community leaders around. Since age 11, he has been volunteering in various activities in and around the communities of the Southern and Southeastern Dallas areas.

At age 23 he was one of the youngest then to seek political office for Dallas City Council. He services on the Greater Dallas Crime Commission, the Dallas County Criminal Justice Advisor Board, the Balch Springs Economic Development Board of Directors, and other community roles has been well-noted. At age 32 he became one of the youngest African American Police Chiefs in the state of Texas, at that time.

This man has become well known across Texas, on Social Media and local radio for his “Real Talk” messages. He is known for working with all people from different political or social viewpoints so that the final product of hard work supports and benefits those communities he has engaged.

He initiated MLK and Cinco De Mayo
celebrations in Balch Springs, TX. This new City Manager and former Mayor have crisscrossed the state completing over 32,000 miles to meet and hear from Texans across the state, thus again living out Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dream of forging a diverse and harmonious nation, thus solidifying his Davis name in Texas African American History.
